I completely agree with the author of this excerpt I’ve always thought that the 5 paragraph essay has been out dated and in my opinion it should only be used in the very amateur stages of writing. The 5 paragraph essay module, I feel, puts limitations on the writer in terms of exploring the idea that the writer is writing about. Not only that but it also causes the writer to drone on because they need to reach 5 paragraphs in order for it to qualify as an essay when the idea they are writing about just doesn’t require that much information. I would much rather read a one paragraph essay that explores the idea and gives me a good understanding of the topic than a 5 paragraph essay that gives me a bunch of extra information. I think they should just give students the liberty to write as much as they need to for their topic within reason. This is much better because this allows the writer to explore the idea as much as they need to.
