Clapping for the wrong reasons

Clapping for the wrong reasons is a short film by Donald Glover. He made two “types” of this short film one that’s a little less than a minute called the internet version and the other type is called the directors cut. The idea is based on how we see the lives of rappers and how rappers see their own lives. The internet version has a more upbeat pace to it and shows the most interesting parts of the film in its entirety while the directors cut shows the full day and how uneventful and lonely it is. He goes around for people to talk to but when he goes he only is met with people talking about themselves without allowing him to speak. The definition of a directors cut is that a directors cut is supposed to display a directors true intentions as to how the movie was supposed to come about. This short film plays on this meaning because people might see the internet version of the film and think the directors cut is the backup film in a way. They are going to think the internet version is what is intended to see but in reality athe directors cut not only is it what the director wanted to see but it’s also what Donald Glover sees. I love this film because he uses emptiness very cleverly. The amount of downtime that the film house had is what made the film in a way because it encouraged this sense of loneliness throughout the film which made the emptiness of the film a character in it of itself because throughout the film you try to understand why there’s so little dialogue.

Hi David, the piece sounds interesting, but I’m not following your interpretation. Are you proposing that the film is commentary on loneliness? OR that the film is commentary on filmmaking? Remember, the 500-word count is not just about meeting some arbitrary expectation, it’s also a way to develop a critique/analysis.
