Literature Review (Guidance for White America)

Many minorities living in America are often ashamed of their living standard. Thus, America does not give equal opportunities for certain group of race because of their historical and economic past.

America does not give equal opportunities for certain group of race because of their historical past. Minorities challenge themselves in a world full of ignorance because to their skin color. For example, in Baldwin (1963) excerpt it states “you were born where you were born and faced the future that you faced because you were black and for no other reason. The limits of your ambition were, thus, expected to be set forever. You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways possible, that you were a worthless human being” (p.7). Black people are usually the target race of America. The history that America wants to acknowledge have made black americans worthless human beings. Thus, Black people have the mindset of receiving unequal rights with limited ambition because America from the beginning did not want their untitled presence. On the other hand, White americans live a fake world where they do not want to accept the reality of society and are blocked with their ignorance by referring back to America’s past involving black people. White Americans keep going back into the past and bringing it back to today’s realism which causes an outlook of superiority between two races.

Not only does America make people of minority feel worthless because of their race, but it also makes white people with low living standard feel outcast. Another example in Hillbilly Elegy by Vance (2016),it demonstrates that Ivy League schools often admit students from wealthy families where as minorities groups form a low percentage of students admitted. According to Vance (2016), he states “I never felt out of place in my entire life. But I did at Yale. Part of it has to do with social class. A student survey found that over 95 percent of Yale Law’s students qualified as upper-middle class or higher, and most of them qualified as outright wealthy” (pp. 202-203). America will make you realize that you are qualified enough for an Ivy League school if you do come from a wealthy family. It shows coming from a low income neighborhood and being surrounded by many rich kids in an Ivy League school it creates an uncomfortable environment, that they may feel ashamed of their living standards they were used to back home. Vance (2016) reveals the difference in customs and values between wealthy kids and minority people such as the situation at dinner where the people left their plates at the table.
