Sophia Bush, the well known actress, is famous for her roles on television series, but many do not know her dedication as an advocate for women’s education. Sophia Bush is recognized as the brown-haired, green-eyed lady with an eye-catching smile on and off screen. The thirty-five year old from California has proven her dedication to educating the ladies in society by working and volunteering in the United States along with countries overseas.
Bush took a trip to Guatemala during the week of her 30th birthday as an ambassador for a non-profit organization called Pencils of Promise (PoP). PoP is dedicated to building schools, training teachers, funding scholarships and raising awareness about the poor quality of education children in other countries are given. Bush’s goal was to raise 30,000 dollars by the time of her birthday (July 8th) and asked her fans, family, and friends to donate as much as they can. She completed her goal five days early and the money raised to build a school in Guatemala was used for its purpose. She was inspired by how quick she raised so much money for a great cause so she decided to take it to the next level. She then created a contest in which to become a candidate, they had to donate 30 dollars (for her 30th birthday) and the winner would take a trip to Guatemala with Bush and visit the school their donation was used to build. Sophia Bush continues to effectively speak out to the public and in particular, her female fans about how important it is to be educated.
Bush teamed up with Teva Women’s Health -a pharmaceutical company- to launch #NoHormonesPLZ campaign to raise awareness for the different types of birth control that are offered. Bush stated “It’s important to talk about empowering women by giving them sovereignty over their own bodies…” in an interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine this past July. She believes that women should be informed about all the options available even if they do not want to take advantage of them. In this campaign, she emphasizes that there is a non- hormonal birth control option which I didn’t even know about until Bush started advocating for it. Sophia’s objective and end goal for pushing #NoHormonesPLZ slogan is to make sure every girl, young and old, is aware of their options.
Sophia Bush began living her activist life five years ago when she became an ambassador for PoP and then traveled to South America. Since then she has done extensive research and reputable work so women around the world become well educated. Her campaign with Teva Women’s Health has brought to light information that many would not have learned. Sophia Bush, the activist and advocate for women’s education works very hard till this day so she can help young women. She wants to break down any barriers that are keeping women from educating themselves and eachother.
