Research Project Proposal:
In 300 words, identify what you’ll be investigating for this research project. Specifically, answer the following questions:
1. What is your argument?
2. How will you support your argument?
3. What kind of research will you need? From what fields of study?
4. What do you hope to challenge through this research project?
5. What do you hope to support through this research project?
6. What makes this research project timely? -

My argument is that we need to contribute to the minimizing of waste in NYC one habit at a time, one individual at a time. I will support my argument with articles written on ways to reduce waste and the effect of waste on the environment. The research I need is studies on the environment, where waste goes, and data collected on an average individual’s production of trash in NYC. This will be taken from the scientific field, specifically environmental science. I hope to challenge the thought that one person won’t make a difference in such a big cause or problem. Through this project I hope to support the strength in one person’s actions and propel people to be proactive in helping. This subject itself is timely because there are a lot of efforts being made to promote “reduce, reuse, recycle” but I feel most people don’t pay attention or aren’t aware of the waste problem we are facing. A slogan won’t convince people of the importance and severity of our actions on the environment.

I can’t wait Larissa, I’m particularly moved by your assertion that a slogan can’t fix everything, that we need to do more than just say we recycle, but actually recycle! You might look at places like Germany where they have a much stronger commitment to the environment and recycling.

My argument is that make up is not good for the skin. I will support this claim by finding the disadvantages of makeup, and getting public opinions on make up as well. The kind of research found are what are the different disadvantages, what are the long term effects of make up, how are they tested to be approved and how have they evolved over time. I will get the disadvantages by dermatologist. What i hope to challenge with this research project is the opinion of people that wear make up on a daily basis, and even though they might not see how it affects them in the moment they will eventually see results in the long run. What i hope to support is that people embrace their natural beauty and stop trying to better their appearances so much. They must love their natural beauty because their natural beauty is the thing that differs them from others physically. What makes this project timely is the research that i needed to do and getting the people to interview as well as putting together the videos.

This will be great Nathalie. Your research makes your work timely, but I think the moment we’re in with Instagram and Youtube makes your project timely as well. All I see are videos about how to apply the newest makeup. I’ve also noticed that makeup does more than just highlight features, it can make us look like DIFFERENT people. Do you think we’re using makeup now in the way we might’ve used plastic surgery?

My argument is that while technology has benefited us, it is causing us more harm than good. I will support my argument by talking about how social media affects human behavior by making us more distant. Also the loss of habitat of animals and nuclear weapons will be used. I will also talk about artificial intelligence and how that can be used to harm the human race. I will need scientific research and statistics and data. I hope to challenge myself through this study, to see if technology is really for the better or for the worse or maybe come to a new conclusion all together. I hope to make it more aware that we should be cautious on the path that we are choosing to go down when it comes to technology. What makes this research timely is because we humans are advancing rapidly when it comes to technology and it has become a large part of our culture, you never really see anyone without a smart phone. It is important to shed light on something that could impact future generations.

I can’t wait to read this project as I tend to think technology is doing more good than harm. I wonder if you can weave in the work you’ve done with morality here. Is there any way that technology blurs the lines of “good” and “bad?” OR a way that technology makes it seem like people are either JUST good or JUST bad?

For this <span style=”margin: 0px; font-family: ‘Times New Roman’,serif; font-size: 12pt;”>research project, the argument will be that the life of an ex-inmates should be worth living for them. The argument will be supported by explaining the need for ex-inmates to live a good and balanced life to show how responsible they are after leaving the jail. Also, the role of government in giving grants for inmates’ education in prison and the role of the society in incorporation the ex-inmates will be discussed. For the research project, I will use the reports of individuals by print media alongside with testimonies, and figures to drive home my argument. Moreover, I will use the research from criminology department, education department, social workers and from non-profit making organizations will be used in the research project. This research project will be written basically to challenge the government, employers and the rich who can afford to render a helping hand to the inmates. The research project is hoping to support the need for every individual to be treated with love, fairness and justice. This research project is timely because the hardship faced by ex-inmates is current and there are many inmates still in prison hoping to be released into the society. Also, the issue of giving out more federal grants to inmates is still on ground. </span>

Titilayo, your emphasis on education and social work makes me think this is not just a project that wants to inform, but a project that wants to create change. Knowing this, you might consider weaving in “activism.” That is, what should we be DOING to create this change? Who should we reach out to?

This is such an important project. Based on your goals– to illustrate the ways families are wrong or not doing enough when it comes to bullying, you might really consider doing something visual here. Perhaps a bunch of testimonies from different parents and then your narration afterwards explaining what they’ve said that is problematic or in need of improvement. I can see that working as a recorded podcast or a video report or an essay that includes pictures of the people that are giving their testimonies.

In this research project I will probably be focusing on expanding my argumentative essay on the “American Dream” and how it is difficult for many Americans to achieve this goal due to inequality. Although my argumentative essay wasn’t the best I will try and keep the focus clear in this research project. Many outside resources will help me achieve this goal because there is many cases where a lot of Americans have been denied of jobs and opportunities because of their race or gender which deprives them of the chance to be able to strive to live the “American Dream.” The type of research I will need is mostly statistics and people who actually experienced this from actual businesses. Through this research project I would hope to challenge society and the ideals that our country is the perfect place to start a new and successful life, I will try to question the fact that is this country even a place for anybody but the white man. I hope to support the fact that our country is unfair and to obtain the “American Dream” might be one of the hardest things to do unless you are a caucasian man that has been born and raised in this country. This project will be timely because there is many statistics to discover and search for and many ideas that can help support this claim and its up to me to narrow it down. To gather all the research and to just to make sure it all ties together is a big part of the time.

I think expanding a project that you feel you didn’t do too well in is a great idea as there’s so much opportunity for revision. I get your argument is the American Dream is not real. You give one reason here– it’s only real for white men. I wonder if you might come up with other reasons. Another thing to consider is– WHY should readers in 2017 care if the American Dream is not real? Do you think people still believe it to be real? If so, why? What do you hope you’ll be able to say to these people?

My argument is that sugar is detrimental to people’s health. Many scientists, journalists, and scholars believe that sugar is responsible for people’s deteriorating health. Sugar has no nutritional value and is an addictive carbohydrate. There are good reasons to believe that sugar is something that can be harmful. The reasons are because sugar has effects on the brain, heart, and immune system. (I will update my argument). To support my argument, I will use articles that are peer-reviewed, and research done preferably by medical schools. With this research, I hope to challenge people to eat less sugar. I hope to support the argument that people should eat less sugar through this research project. I believe this project is timely because people should know the truth about sugar. I do understand that we all know that sugar is not good for us. However, are people aware of the real problems that sugar can cause to their health besides diabetes?

For my research project I think I will continue with my argumentative essay and continue the topic of child labor. This time for this project I will talk about that child labor is affecting India specifically and that its causing it to slow down its development. I will support my argument with specific articles and studies on child labor in India.I would need specific information on India and the amount of child workers. I will also need specific articles of how India is behind in development and may even compare it to another country. This would need specific studies of child labor’s affects and statistics on India. In this research project i would like to challenge he idea that child labor actually helps with poverty. I will talk about how child labor may increase the families income but because of low pay it doesn’t mean that it will end poverty. it actually would increase it because it will just continue like this from one generation to another.I will support the idea that child labor slows down development and how f we don’t end it or try to at least it will affect everyone in the world. And that it would only increase poverty and may even spread it. I would also support how children need to live their childhood to be productive and healthy. This is a timely research project because child labor is still strong in may countries and most of them depend deeply on it.

This is going to be great Amina. I especially like the fact that you’re going to focus on one country. Just a heads up, I’m not sure there’s a strong belief out there that child labor helps with poverty. Most would agree it’s not a good thing. So you might want to spend more time proving the consequences of child labor in India and the ways we can stop it OR the ways we allow it to happen.

I’ve been back and forth on research topics but ultimately I decided I wanted to focus on mental health. I believe it is as important, if not more, than physical health which I know I have predominantly tried to stay close to when it comes to research. I knew that I wanted this research paper to be personal so when contemplating whether or not I should create an autoethnography piece, I realized in the midst of it all, the importance of being mentally stable and healthy. At the age of thirteen, I had mild depression and I can’t imagine how my life would be now if I still had it. I will, therefore, be arguing the importance of understanding and formulating comprehensive treatment for depressed adolescents, particularly females, who research shows are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety and depression. To support my argument I will use statistics and other research conducted that proves how prevalent depression is in female adolescents and the benefits of holistic and comprehensive treatment have been able to have on depressed girls. I will be diving into the mental health field and therefore, have to find scholarly articles and research that touches base on depression and young girls. I want to challenge the belief that depression in young adults is merely just a “phase” but instead something serious that needs to be treated. By doing this, I hope to support mental health awareness in youth. What makes this research project timely is the fact that we now live in an era where technology has swallowed many young people and has thus allowed them to find refuge and a haven in an unknown world rather than face reality and seek appropriate treatment.

For my research paper, I will expand my argument essay about Violent Behavior in Youth. My argument is that youth have violent behavior because the circumstances as domestic violence and the relationship with the environment. I am supporting my argument with statistics and articles from news but also, I will add how this conduct affect the lives of the youth and add some examples. I hope to challenge people who think that they are not violent and that these factors lead to youth to be in that way. Though this project, I hope to support people who have children and myself (I don’t have kids but for when the day is to come) to be involved in their lives, to see what they do inside and outside home and also, to be careful in what adults do in from of them. Also, I hope to show to young people that this way of being will affect their future in a negative way. What makes this research project timely is the fact that every day I see in the news children who die tragically, and teenager who are being bullied, and I believe that when this violent behavior is not diminished or treated on time, is one of causes of the massive tragedies that are happening nowadays. I think people do not have the appreciation for the life as has to be. Also, I believe the society must take action on the matter. We cannot allow that more children have traumas in their childhood and adolescence that will make them violent and will affect them lifelong.

Violence and youth is especially important given all of the recent mass shootings and the conversations about masculinity and violence. I’m drawn to this part where you advocate for a change. Do you think you’ll frame this paper as a call for change? If so, you might want to embed positive changes we should make to correct the many problems you’ll point us to.

I’m arguing that women have broken out of the stereotypical mold society held them in. Women have been oppressed for too long. Gender roles have taken over and it’s time to de-assign roles. Women are always being judged and criticized, from the way a woman dresses suggesting her sexuality to the milestones a woman should reach at each stage in her life. I will support this argument with various media and testimonies. Along with research from social platforms. I hope to challenge women to realize the limitations in place and to continue breaking the molds. I would like to support all the women empowered movements occurring in the nation. Women are taking charge of their lives and living outside society’s norm. This project will be timely because it will be a digital project.

This feels like it’s all about empowering women. This makes me think your tumblr project should try to form an immediate relationship with the reader, but that it should also inform the reader HOW they can about de-assigning these gender roles.
I think of an organizational structure that involves posting on one gender “role” or “stereotype” at a time.

In my research project I want to argue that consuming dairy products is worse than consuming meat. Dairy is often overlooked when it comes to the question “whether or not humans should consume animal products.’ I want to show my audience why dairy products are unethical and cruelly produced while inflicting torture and abuse on dairy cows and I want to show why its consumption has a great impact on our health. Thus, I need to research medical scholarly articles, studies and publications from governmental health organizations that show how dairy products cause diseases. Additionally, I might use several documentaries and speeches of well-known doctors who advocate my position. I hope to challenge the mainstream view of dairy products and want to debunk the myth that dairy is good and necessary for maintaining good health. In addition, I might also include advertising campaigns from the dairy industry, showing how they purposely target school-aged children to drive up profits and other marketing strategies that are utilized to trick consumers into buying their dairy products despite their health risk. With this research paper I hope to support the vegan movement and aim at explaining why being vegetarian is not enough. What makes this research project timely are the urging global crises that could be resolved by going vegan including rising death rates from heart disease and diabetes, world hunger, and global warming.
-
December 6, 2017 at 2:14 pm #748Dhipinder WaliaKeymaster
You know at this point that I’m all on board with your research. I think the way you’ve incorporated medical research and advertisements works to prove veganism is a worldly, interdisciplinary topic, not just one relegated to hipsters in Brooklyn.
The only thing I strongly suggest you do is add on to your already wonderful blog. Creating pages that talk about ads, dairy and health, etc. might be a wonderful way to flesh out your blog, making it valuable for a global audience.

In my research paper I’ll be arguing educational inequality has a negative impact on minorities. School system is set up to put minorities at a disadvantage by offering limited to no resources yet expecting these students to be on the same academic level as students in wealthier school districts. Through research I hope to show that based on where schools are located there isn’t enough experienced teachers, basic resources such as a library might not be available and in most cases school don’t offer any after school programs. Yet in wealthier school districts there’s an abundance of resources and experienced teachers to help ensure that each kid reaches their potential. I hope to compare graduation rates, test scores and the school districts.

Your proposal makes me think you’re not just interested in showing adoption as a better choice, but that you’re interested in de-stigmatizing adoption. I wonder if that’s how you should frame your powerpoint? Maybe it’s less about abortion, and more about clarifying myths, untruths surrounding adoption? Consider embedding video/audio testimonies within your powerpoint.

For my research project, I want to argue that it is important to teach students how to set goals in a classroom, so that they learn how to set goals in their own personal lives.I will support my argument with articles written on ways to set smart goals and the effect of setting goals on students academic life. The research I need is studies on the students’ achievement based on if they have set goals or not. Articles will be taken from the education field. I hope to challenge the thought that goal setting could prove to be highly beneficial to students at all grade levels.I hope to support through this research project that personal setting and achieving goals are to the “self” which effects self-efficacy, self-image, and personal success. This research paper itself is timely because there are a lot of efforts being made to promote goal-setting as a highly beneficial to students at all grade levels, however, is still not typically taught in education.

The argument is that recycling is beneficial to all. My thesis will be something close to this: scientists and economists conducted studies that demonstrate recycling mitigates climate change and minimizes pollution, reduces energy consumption, creates more jobs and generates more taxes that will aid federal and local governments. I will target scientific research of climate change, the different recycling processes and the cost to recycle each ton of different material. Government websites will be used to ensure they are credited and provide accurate information. I will challenge those who do not believe recycling is needed and explain why it is necessary for everyone to recycling. I hope to support the efforts of so many people that have been a voice for a long time but aren’t given the attention they deserve. This is a timely matter because although the idea was introduced a long time ago, America has only been practicing the idea for 30-something years and we have not found a way to maximize the pro’s or recycling. Many are against recycling and that is probably why they do not know the positive results that come from it so the objective is to get everyone on board. I believe recycling will be a timely matter for a long time because it’s nearly impossible to get a whole country to agree but if other countries can maximize the use of recycling, so can we.
-
December 6, 2017 at 3:01 pm #758Dhipinder WaliaKeymaster

I wonder if you’re really focusing on ways we can be BETTER at recycling. If that’s the case, then you don’t have to focus so much on the general, well-known benefits of recycling, but instead focus on how we can IMPROVE the way we recycle through…. and focus on the links these improvements will have to climate change, etc.

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>For my research paper, I’ll be using my argumentative essay and expanding it. My argument is why do we like to eat fast food, what are the advantages and disadvantages of eating fast food and how is impacting us. I will support my argument by explaining why do we eat fast food in the first place and what happens every time we eat it. I would have a person’s testimony explaining why they eat fast food and what do they think happens to their body after eating fast food. Also I would have a doctor’s point of view in my research in which they explain the advantages and disadvantages of eating fast food more deeply, meaning what parts of our body does it affect the most. However, with this research paper, I’m hoping to challenge and support people to stop consuming fast food and eat more healthy food. I think what makes this research project timely is all the information and ideas you’ll need to gather to support the argument and putting it together as a whole is a big thing that takes a lot of time. </span>

Hi Natalia, I’m excited to see where this project takes you. One suggestion I want to make is that you don’t get too caught up in the question of “Why do people eat fast food?” as that’s a hard question to answer. I instead like the approach of refuting the many reasons people choose to eat fast food. For instance, if researchers write it’s because of convenience, show how healthier options can be convenient too.

How cool that you’re able to combine your concept and argumentative work. It also shows the relevance of your anti-testing project as the more popular makeup becomes, the more tempting it will be for brands to test on animals. Again, I’m curious to see whether you’ll position this project as more of a activist initiative directed towards makeup consumers and companies, advising them what they can do to save the animals OR if you’ll make this more of an informational project for ALL people. If it’s for ALL, you’ll need to figure out why this project will matter for folks who don’t wear or buy makeup.

<p class=”p1″><span class=”s1″>My project is more of a proposal than an argument. Towards the start of the semester I did a paper about the concept of time travel. I explained what it was and what it would mean if it were to be something we could control. Because of this, my research project will be taking the effects of time travel and how it could have been used in past situations. These situations will be related to the papers I’ve written throughout this past semester. The support of this proposal will come from the potential outcomes that time travel can have on past topics. For example, my summary of a person involved Danny making some hasty decisions and acting in the heat of the moment, therefore I’m going to be integrating the potential of time travel and how it could’ve been used to go back and fix any past mistakes. In a sense, I’m going to be analyzing where someone or something went wrong, tell how that mistake could be fixed, and how that fixed mistake would affect the world. Now first thing’s first, I’m going to need to do some backtracking to learn the history of my other topics, namely Danny, the MTA, climate change, etc. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from history it’s that a lot of rash decisions have either been made by people with too much power or too little time on their hands and I’m hoping to challenge that. Take the MTA for example, they are willing to raise the toll to make a little more money if they are on the brink of a deficit but they rarely take the needs of their riders into account. This can be considered a panic decision due to the fact that there’s a legitimate threat to their business and they choose a course of action likely without proper planning. As a result, I want to support the idea of thinking before you make a choice and thinking of the consequences on yourself and people around you. Powerful people a few decades ago didn’t support this idea and look how the world works now. I’m hoping this can help people see that there’s a lot more issues going on in the world that we could’ve done something about and in the future we’ll realize that we have more potential to help or harm the world and ourselves than we think.</span></p>

For my project I will be stemming off of my argumentative essay to argue that patients living with a terminal illness, should have the right to physician assisted suicide. I will support my argument with multiple stories of testimonies from patients that wish for this right. I will need medical research. I hope that my project challenges the other side of the argument and help people see the other side of the spectrum for what it really is. I hope to support everyone that is in the situation where the right to die is not granted to them and I want to let them know there are people who understands their decision and feel like it’s the right one. This project is timely because there’s so many stories today if people being denied the right to die. Even though it’s not something talked about often it’s something that deserves to be talked about.
