Analysis of Image

On the right side a planned luxurious building, on the left side unfinished houses in a Brazilian slum, known as a favela. This photo was taken by photographer Tuca Vieira in São Paulo, Brazil. The purpose of the photo was to show a place divided by social inequality. However, what is behind is even stronger. Sometimes people talk about inequality but they do not know how is to live in either of these extreme. So, the photo also represents how life can be different for poor and rich people even when they live so close to each other.
The few colors of the favela represent a side that is dull, dingy, and depressing. That is because the place is completely unfinished and poor. This side shows houses of rough brick, dirt roads, lack of basic sanitation, no leisure, poverty, life without color. On this side, there is lack of practically everything. People survive on the basics. Probably they are dependent on the jobs the rich area and the government offer them. In addition, this side shows how hard it might be to live so close to a dreamy place and stay in an unfinished and unfortunate place. Further, it shows that probably the lack of opportunities, education, money made people accept living the way they live.
On the other hand, the other side shows a side with vivid colors and what money offers to those who have it. The photo shows a bright side where a building with a pool in each apartment, sports court, a public pool, green areas, basic sanitation, leisure, color, and life offers a comfortable life to its residents. Those who live in this place must have an enjoyable and a happy life. They probably had better opportunities in life, better education, better conditions, so they could afford to live in such a place, different from those who live on the other side.
